The Most Unfiltered Video I’ve Ever Made

I just posted a video about the job market for entry-level folks in tech. Let’s just say it’s going to be… divisive. It has a very tough love perspective on how to handle difficult things.

I was scared to post this, but I went through with it because I truly believe that for the right person it can be helpful.

AI Engineering Concepts - ELI5

On a lighter note, this week’s main tech video was fun! I did an overview of all the core concepts in AI Engineering, explained as simply as I possibly could. Check it out for a beginner-friendly breakdown of the field.

And here’s the blog version.

Btw, this video went live for channel members nearly a week ago! If you want to get access to videos before they’re released, you can join my YouTube channel membership for just $3.99 a month.

What’s the Worst That Can Happen?

I'm deep in research mode for the book I'm planning to write next year, and I've been reading a bunch of Stoic philosophy. One concept that I really love is negative visualization (premeditato malorum). Basically, you spend time thinking about all the bad things that could happen in your life.

The Stoics take this pretty far. They contemplate losing their possessions, their status, their health, their loved ones, and even their own lives. Marcus Aurelius would remind himself each morning that he might not make it to sunset. Epictetus told his students to remember, when kissing their children goodnight, that it could be the last time.

Sounds kinda depressing, right?

It’s actually the opposite. The Stoic perspective is that the more desperately we cling to our current circumstances, the more we suffer when they inevitably change.

Negative visualization teaches you to hold your life lightly. You learn to squeeze every drop of joy from what you have right now, while also preparing yourself for loss.

If imagining your own losses feels too intense, pay attention to the difficult things happening to people around you, and reflect on how easily those same problems could have happened to you. Even if those in your personal life are well off, this is pretty easy to do if you pay any attention to the news. It’s not about feeling superior or grateful for others' pain, but about recognizing how random fortune really is, and how much of our current comfort is just luck.

Negative visualization isn't about walking around with a rain cloud over your head. It's about paying real attention to what you already have. When you regularly consider how things could go wrong, you stop taking the good stuff for granted. You become more present, more grateful, and more alive to the moment you're actually living in.

The Stoics believed that the person who has prepared for loss is the person who can truly enjoy what they have. They're not constantly anxious about protecting their circumstances because they've already made peace with change.

Maybe that's worth thinking about. What would shift in your life if you stopped trying so hard to make everything permanent, and instead focused on being fully present to what's here right now?
