Is Data Science Dying?

In my coaching work, I’ve seen a big decline in the interest in Data Science over the last year or so. Many people, myself included, have this intuition that data science as a field is on the decline.

But I decided to actually see if this is true. The data surprised me here.

The Most Important Thing You’re Probably Not Doing

I've been lifting weights 5-6 times a week for 10 years. Crossfit, Strongman, powerlifting, you name it. At 33, I'd never dealt with chronic pain from lifting or otherwise.

Until I drove 20 hours in four days this summer and ended up with a bulging disc.

Turns out deadlifting 2x my body weight is fine, but sitting too long in a shrimp position is not ideal. 🍤

I started physical therapy, and was humbled fast. For most of my years in the gym, I’ve focused on the big, fancy lifts. I never paid attention to the small stabilizers that would help me avoid injuries in daily life. I’ve been neglecting the basic, boring things, and it showed when I couldn’t do a plank for 1 minute without shaking.

I see this kind of thing a lot in career development, too.

No matter where we are in our careers, we often want to chase the new tool or framework. Which is great! It’s important to stay up-to-date. But if we don’t have a solid foundation, this can come back to bite us in the butt.

This is especially true in the era of vibe coding, where you can build fancy things even with very little (or no) understanding of what’s actually happening. And it works! Until it doesn't. Until you need to debug why your model is degrading or optimize a query that's timing out. Or explain to a stakeholder why your approach has some critical flaw.

So, I’d encourage you to spend some time evaluating how strong your fundamentals really are. Just because you can make something work, doesn’t mean you couldn’t make something incredible if you took a step back, learned the boring stuff, and came back stronger.
