I Got a Puppy.
On Friday, I picked up my new puppy. This is Appa.

(like Appa from Airbender)
She’s a 10-week-old golden retriever, and she is very good.
I’ve never had a dog of my own, and truthfully, this last week has been an absolute shit-show.
I thought I was prepared. I watched videos, took courses, read books — and I still have no idea what I’m doing. It has been overwhelming and stressful. My entire life has been completely torn upside down and all my time, attention, and priorities have been replaced by this fluffy terror. I’m doing my best but I’m sure I haven’t been doing things perfectly.
And that’s ok. I expect to make mistakes and learn along the way.
This approach — knowing that I probably won't do a great job right away, but that I will get better over time with practice — is known as a "growth mindset." I'm sure many of you are familiar with this, but as a reminder, a growth mindset is the belief that your abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. It's the understanding that you're not born with a fixed set of talents or intelligence and rather that these are things you can develop over time. This is different from a fixed mindset, where you believe your abilities are static and unchangeable, basically predetermined traits you either have or don't have.
People with a fixed mindset avoid challenges because they feel that failure is a reflection of who they are as a person. People with a growth mindset, on the other hand, view failure more like data. They enjoy challenges and see them as opportunities to push themselves and grow.
As you can imagine, a growth mindset is more important to your success than innate talent. This applies to all areas of life — academics, work, and even raising a puppy.
So don’t be afraid to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, even if failure is a likely outcome. You’ll learn something along the way, and be better next time.
How to Use AI Coding Assistants — the RIGHT Way
I am so much faster at work since the AI coding assistants improved the last couple of years. But this isn’t always the case — it’s really easy to use these tools inefficiently or incorrectly.
My video this week is all about how to use AI coding assistants correctly. It’s a quick video packed with ideas you can start using today.
There’s no blog version this week because I heavily borrowed from this site while writing the script (with the creator’s permission) — so no need for me to reinvent the wheel.
