The #1 Reason I’ve Been Successful
I've been lucky to have a lot of success in my life, both personally and professionally. I can attribute this to a combination of mindset, habits, and luck. But one thing has really stood out as the primary driver behind most of my achievements.
I’m not fucking around.
When I commit to something, I go all in. I do my best, and I do what's required to give myself the highest possible chance of success. Here’s what that looks like:
If I’m taking a course, I don’t just passively listen to the lecture and skim my notes before the test. I engage with the material, read the book, find extra learning resources, get help if I need it, create a comprehensive study guide, hold a learning group for my peers, and go into the test with complete confidence that I will get the highest possible grade.
If I’m starting a new job, I don’t take my time onboarding. I show up to the job having learned everything I can about the company, their tech stack, and with a list of questions a mile long on day 1. My goal is to deliver value before any other employee is even onboarded.
If I get a puppy, I don’t just feed it and take it for a walk. I read books, take courses, talk to trainers, and schedule time out of my day every single day to make sure I’m doing my absolute best to make this an awesome dog.
If I start dating someone I like, I don’t just text them back every few days and string them along. I am clear about what I’m looking for and I follow through. I actively ask questions to get to know them, I proactively schedule time, and I communicate when something isn’t working.
For my health, I don’t just mindlessly go to the gym when I have time. I schedule it into my calendar, push myself as hard as I can, and I show up every single day regardless of how I’m feeling.
^ This is what not fucking around looks like.
Now, taking things seriously doesn't mean there's no space for fun or silliness. What it means is remembering that we only get one life. We have a limited amount of time to do everything that matters to us, experience what we want to experience, and achieve what we care about. Everything we have could disappear at any time. We can't take our loved ones or our future opportunities for granted.
Fully committing to something requires confidence. It requires knowing who you are, what you care about, and what you're capable of. It means refusing to accept anything less than your absolute best from yourself on a consistent basis.
I'm not saying this is easy. But I can say with certainty that those of us who aren't fucking around — who show up, stay committed, and give our all — will always outperform people who don't have that same drive.
