How I Stay Consistent, Every Single Day
When I first started making videos, I was often frustrated by the technical side of filming. I was brand new to audio, cameras, lighting, editing, etc., and it was not unusual to spend a ton of time filming only to find out the audio didn’t work, or the lights were flickering, and I’d need to re-do a ton of work.
The whole thing brought out the worst in me. I dreaded filming and it put me in a bad mood.
I realized I needed to change my mindset. Yes, it was frustrating and overwhelming. But I needed to zoom out and remember why I was doing this in the first place.
At the same time, I needed to toughen up. This was hardly the most challenging situation I’d ever been in.
So I wrote this note to myself on the chalkboard in my office, and it’s been there ever since:

I was thinking about this recently and realized, this note is basically just my approach to life and work.
I am very focused on the meaning behind my work. This ranges from big things, like trying to help people get jobs they love and lead good lives, to little things, like how scooping the litter box is an act of service to small animals that need my support.
At the same time, I do well with messaging around discipline and hard work. I recognize how ridiculously easy my life is in every way that matters, from both a global and historical perspective.
My great-great grandmother came to the U.S. on a boat as a young child, without her parents, and worked manual labor jobs for low wages and without time off or any of the comforts I take for granted. I can manage filming this video in my climate controlled home, with a belly full of food, and a literal hot tub to relax in afterwards. It really will be ok.
This balance of finding purpose and pushing myself a little outside of my default comfort zone has served me well in many aspects of my life. Consistency stops feeling like a burden and starts feeling like a choice I'm grateful to be able to make.
