I’m burned out (but probably not why you think)
I've been working 60+ hours a week for over a year between my full-time job and content creation + coaching, and I'm finally feeling burned out for the first time. But what I realized is it's not actually the workload that's getting to me.
It's the loss of control.
Until now, I've had autonomy over my time. If I had a lot to do, I could wake up earlier, rearrange my day, or shift things around. But new responsibilities and constraints have limited my room to maneuver, and that's what's actually draining me.
This is what burnout often looks like. It's rarely just about working too much, but more about losing your sense of agency. When you're doing work that doesn't feel meaningful, working for someone who micromanages, or operating under constraints that strip away your autonomy, that's when being tired turns into burnout.
So now I need to do the hard work of reconnecting with my agency. I need to remember that I chose this path. And even the things that feel completely outside my control are often more within my control than I give myself credit for. The constraints are real, but so is my ability to navigate them.
One of the key things I’m working on is figuring out how I can get help. In my personal life, this means coordinating better with my husband, and potentially getting some help around the house. At work it means being clear about what I have capacity for. And in my content creation business, it means seeing if there are things I could potentially outsource or scale back, or more efficient ways I can make the rest of it happen.
I find that admitting that we have limits can be difficult for high achievers. My default reaction to stress is to buckle down and work harder — but that can only go so far. Sometimes the right thing to do is to slow down, take an honest look at yourself and what you can and cannot do, and be strategic instead of stubborn.
I wrote this post to convince myself. Let’s see if it works. 🙃
